5 Times That You Should Consider Changing Your Locks

Posted on: 26 February 2020

Australia has one of the highest burglary rates in the world, and burglaries happen in many ways. Sometimes, intruders gain entry because they somehow have access to your keys. This is why it's important that you understand when the time is right to change the locks on your home's doors.

If you encounter the following situations, consider changing the locks on your home's doors.

1. Someone Moves Out

When someone moves out of your home, consider changing the locks. You have no idea whether that person has made a copy of the keys they handed back to you before they left. This is especially important if that person left on poor terms, such as an ex-spouse or a badly behaved tenant. Otherwise, there will always be the risk that they could return one day and enter your home freely.

2. You Move Home

When you move into a new home, you have no way of knowing just how many other people have a copy of the keys you now own. How many times has the home been renovated? How many times has the house changed hands over the years? These are just two of the questions you need to ask yourself. You have no idea who might have gotten hold of a set of keys over the years.

3. Builders Finish a Renovation

Builders usually require access to your home whilst you are not there. This means that they often have access to your keys. Unless you know them personally or they are a family member, it's a good idea to change the locks on your home once they have left.

4. You Lose Your Keys

If your keys go missing one day, changing the locks on your home is an urgent priority. After all, you don't know if someone else has your keys, nor do you know if they will use those keys to gain entry to your home at some point. It's better to err on the side of caution.

5. Your Locks Are Ancient

Old locks have seen years of wear and tear. This makes them more difficult to lock and unlock. The moving parts inside the lock are old and worn, and thus the risk of the lock jamming increases greatly. Moreover, a burglar can make short work of an older lock.
